•The E-Max 1600 was introduced in the early 80’s, and was a tentative step taken by Ford towards lean burn combustion in the interests of fuel economy. This engine differs from the standard OHC 1600 ‘pinto’ engine in several areas including; a much longer stroke with a smaller cylinder bore configuration along with smaller valves in the cylinder head. A different carburettor, a Lucas ‘hall effect’ distributor and an ESC (Electronic Spark Control) system are also used. The ESC system has a range of spark advance settings stored in its memory, and a suitable setting is selected for the relevant engine speed and load, meaning that the degree of advance can be constantly varied, again in the interests of fuel economy. The E-Max's final drive (differential) ratio is 3.38:1 (3.62:1 is the standard ratio for the 1600).
